

The students volunteered at the east fork of the river outside Markleville, CA. Every year on the same day the Carson River is tested at various locations. On Friday, October 16, students from Carson and Douglas High School teamed up with the Carson Water Subconservancy Agency for the annual Carson Watershed SnapShot Day.

The following are the top 5 finishers: 1st Place – Kyle Kettn (9th Grade) time 1:28:19, 2nd Place – Dylan Velez (11th Grade) time 1:36:11, 3rd Place – Chris Berggren (10th Grade/Team Captain) 1:45:21, 4th Place – Michael Johnson-Thiess (9th Grade) time 1:45:29, and 5th Place Kenneth Bogle (9th Grade) 1:46:35. A total of 18 cadets participated, 15 of which were freshmen.

Although the majority of the cadets who competed were freshmen, the course set on Sunday was at the mid-level range. The participants’ level of experience is matched to the level of the course. Although the sport can be done by teams, it is an individual sport this means the individual may be out in the wilderness alone for several hours, requiring the individual to be very confident in his or her land navigation skills. Orienteering is a land navigation sport where individuals use a topographic map and compass to navigate from point to point, the winner finishes in the least amount of time. 18, 2015 the Carson High School NJROTC Orienteering team held their first in house Orienteering Meet at Spooner Lake State Park.
